Given that im seen as somewhat of a moan. I've taken it upon myself to fill this board up with weekly moans....
Here is my first weekly moan:
Musical Snobbery..
One thing that's been really getting on my tits big time lately is peoples inabilities to have an open mind when it comes to other peoples tastes in music.
Is it really fair to make fun of somebody becuase they like " uncool " ( i guess we can class this as commercial pop ). And what makes the music you listen to more valid or " better " than someone elses taste.
It would seem that some people have the attitude that because they listen to certain types of music or artists that their opinions on music hold more weight.
It is my personal opinion that all music.... Is great. And im going to tell you why. Personally.. i hate stuff like britney spears or christina aguileira. My reasons are that it doesn't speak to me personally or have any commentary on my life or interests.. I don't like melodies and song structures. But i can respect that other people do genuinley like this stuff and get great satisfaction from listening to it. While it may not spiral off into innovative experimentalism or try to push the envelope we must remember that not every one is in to that. The same way people can be into fine artists like caravaggio or raphael but not appreciate the work like picasso or pollock.
Now... i know that i'm waffling on a bit. and i appluade you if you've even read this far. Im just bored.
Another argument from musical snobs is : " i hate pop because it has no integrity or its sold out stuff " Well, i would consider that an argument in musical politics rather than a critique on the music itself. Wheras less known and underground bands may have more artistic credibility and ideals not tainted by corporate control or by a financially involved third party, that does not make their actual music " better ".Yes, it does make their message more urgent and important, but does not immediatly make them better songs. Now, it's at this point where i admit that i love underground artists. Going against the grain is something i admire and something i want to achieve. One of the few great pleasures in my life is hearing something new and exciting. You know, when you hear someting that powerful that it makes you re-think your approach to music. It makes you pick up an instrument and get better coz yet again that bar has been raised.
But... and here's my main point... While i do not like certain music, i can appreciate it's place in the world. It has a function.
I was watching a bill hicks dvd and he goes on to explain why his favourite artists ( those who play from their fucking hearts ) have a better message to give out to the youth of the world than commercially produced pop artists. While i would agree with him on those points in regards to the banality and insincerity in modern popular music i simply cant deny that artists like n.e.r.d, justin timberlake and kelis make me wanna dance and have a good time....
